Dahlia

‘Twyning’s After Eight’

This superb dahlia is one for those who enjoy contrasts. A white-flowered selection, it bears masses of lovely single 3in (8cm) wide blooms throughout late summer, each with a central golden crown of stamens, petals occasionally with a tinge of pink toward the center. Blooms are produced generously on compact shrubby well-branched plants to around 4ft (1.2m) tall. What sets this dahlia apart is that the white blooms are held against near-black foliage—in truth, the darkest purple-bronze, with the leaf color most intense when growing in full sun. As with all dahlias, plants are best in the open ground, although they will survive in pots. Start tubers off under glass and plant after the frosts in a sunny well-drained spot in fertile soil. Although easy to grow, this is a selection to lift in fall each year—it is too precious to risk losing over winter. Store tubers somewhere frost-free and dry until the following spring.
